ATMOSPHERE
Throughout most of human history, type has been expensive, technical, and time-consuming. This has only really changed in recent times because of the invention of the Macintosh computer and subsequent programs like Fontographer. These inventions absolutely flipped design on its head. Fonts could be created, exported, and used in a matter of days; this gave rise to the experimental side of the typography scene. With this newfound speed, people set out to break every rule of type.

PROMINENT FIGURES
David Carson

Incredibly famous graphic designer, David Carson, innovated the scene by not relying on grid-based layouts and instead opting to use type as the art. His style was dirty, grungy, and eye-opening. David worked at several magazines during his years, most famously at Ray Gun.

Zuzana Licko

Another absolute legend who was creating work during this period in time. Her contributions to early digital typefaces were significant. Her work in experimental design was unintentionally archived through her magazine Emigre. Like her peers, Zuzana rejected the historical rules of type and focused on the intersection of technology and design.
